Set on their flat ends the cylinders stack into short towers, and every child works out quickly that a leaning stack is a falling stack. Turned on their sides they roll, so the same piece becomes a ramp test, a chase, and a reason to build a wall at the edge of the table.

The tray holds all sixty-four in eight rows of eight, which gives color sorting a place to finish. Held up to a window or laid on a light table, two colors overlapped make a third, and children will keep checking that discovery all morning.

Materials & construction

Cast translucent acrylic cylinders with smooth rounded edges, in a wooden tray. Acrylic and tray from China. A standard set in the Chinese market. Quality-checked and shipped from Augsburg, Germany.

64 cylinders, 8 each in 8 colors, plus a wooden tray. Each cylinder about 1 x 1 in. Wooden frame 8.3 x 8.3 x 1.1 in.

Ages 3+. WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD. Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs. Each cylinder is about 1 in and fits the small parts cylinder. Tested to EN 71. CE marked.

Care & storage

Wipe with a damp cloth and mild soapy water, then dry. Avoid disinfectants and hot water, which can cloud acrylic. Store in the tray or box so pieces do not scratch against each other.

Bauspiel Bauspiel is Uwe Deckelmann and his daughter Hanna. 'Bauspiel' means 'building game' in German, and the line grows out of Friedrich Fröbel's kindergarten tradition of simple forms that ask nothing and allow everything. The wood is native European lime, alder and beech, with maple and cherry from sustainable cultivation, colored and oiled so the grain stays visible and the soul of the wood remains perceptible. The acrylic and gems come from Taiwan or China. Everything is quality-checked and shipped from Augsburg, Germany.
