A gingerbread-colored house front under a thick roof of snow, with a red front door, snow along the windowsills, and a chimney on top. It is shallow from front to back because it is scenery. Stand it at the back of a winter scene and the village has its first house.

Age Recommendations

3456

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. Scenery made to come back out every December.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. Most Christmas decorations last one December. This one comes back out every year, and it is carved well enough to stay on a shelf all winter.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that wants one Christmas piece worth unpacking every year, and it gives a child's figures somewhere to spend the holiday.
For the educator
It anchors a seasonal storytelling shelf in December, and as a setting rather than a decoration it invites children to build a plot around the door and the yard.
For the gift-giver
It makes a substantial holiday gift, and the snowman and snow trees can be added to it one at a time.

Ways to play.

Stand the snowman in the yard, set the snow trees on either side, and put the house out on the first of December. Children walk small figures up to the red door, knock, and carry on a whole evening's visit.

Materials & construction

Cut, sanded, and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia, so the grain and color vary a little from piece to piece. Color is worked into the wood, so the grain still shows through.

The wood is solid linden: light for small hands and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge. The houses are shallow standing fronts, made to sit at the back of a scene.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
