A deep blue desert night with two palm trees, a scatter of stars, and a golden shooting star, standing on its own sandy wooden base. It is scenery: set it at the back of a nativity and the stable suddenly has a sky.

Age Recommendations

3456

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. Scenery made to come back out every December.

Why it lasts.

Cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop, with non-toxic paints. It is sized to sit behind the Mako nativity stable, and it gives a stable you already own the night sky it belongs under.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that already has a nativity and wants to give it a setting.
For the educator
It turns a small-world tray into a desert landscape, useful for the nativity in December and for desert and night-sky stories the rest of the year.
For the gift-giver
It makes a thoughtful addition for a family that already owns the Mako nativity scene.

Ways to play.

Stand it behind the stable and let the shooting star lead the way in. Outside the Christmas season it becomes any desert night: a camp under the palms, an oasis for travelers, or a backdrop for animals crossing the sand.

Materials & construction

Cut and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia. The panel is plywood, so a sheet this wide and thin stays flat. Color is worked into the wood, so the grain still shows through.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
