Carved to look like a branch picked up on a walk, the Branch Spoon has a thick, easy-to-hold handle and a smooth bowl for stirring pots and scooping whatever the play kitchen is serving today.

Each one is shaped by hand from a single piece of timber, so no two branches match, exactly like outside.

From age three up. Younger children scoop, stir, and pour; older children run the whole mud kitchen and invent the recipes.

Why it lasts.

We carry Wild Mountain Child because these are real tools, not toy-shaped props: hand-carved, hand-sanded, and hand-polished from Doussie plantation timber by Vietnamese artisans in a traditional craft village, finished in food-grade oil, and designed in Australia by a mother who watched her own child's sensory play and built the tools it was missing. No two are the same, and that is the point.

Carved by hand

Each piece is carved, sanded, and polished by hand from Doussie, a Vietnamese plantation hardwood, so the grain and shape vary from one to the next. No two match, and that is the point.

Made for wet play

A food-grade oil finish lets it go into water, sand, and mud and come back out. A rub of beeswax or oil now and then keeps the wood smooth for years.

Works with the whole range

Has a mini twin, the Branchling, so two cooks can share the kitchen with a big spoon and a small one.

Who it's for

For the parent
A stirring spoon with a chunky handle that small hands can hold with confidence.
For the educator
A thick-handled stirring tool for grip practice at the sensory table.
For the gift-giver
A hand-carved branch for the mud kitchen: a small add-on that makes the gift feel gathered.

Ways to play.

  • Stir pots and potions in the play kitchen
  • Scoop sand, seeds, and petals
  • Pair it with its mini twin, the Branchling, for two cooks

Materials & construction

Hand-carved, hand-sanded, and hand-polished from Doussie, a Vietnamese plantation timber, then finished with food-grade oil. Grain and carving vary piece to piece; that variation is the handwork showing, not a defect. Size: 4.9 × 1.2 in.

Skills it builds

Grip and fine motor, Scooping and stirring, Pretend play, Sensory exploration

Age & safety

Safety

Ages 3+. Solid wood with no paint or varnish, finished with food-grade oil. Check for raised fibers after heavy water play and re-oil as needed. Adult supervision recommended.

Care & storage

Water, sand, and mud play are all fine; just don't leave it soaking for days. Towel-dry after wet play and let it air-dry fully. Now and then, rub in a little beeswax or vegetable oil to keep the fibers smooth. Use only mild dish soap if needed, and never the dishwasher.

Wild Mountain Child Wild Mountain Child is Elise, a nature-play advocate and mother in Australia. Wild Tree Tools began in 2018, after a fair trade project introduced her to artisans in Vietnam. She built the range around their work and now runs the production relationship directly, with the same regional artisans making it for nearly eight years. The work supports a small Vietnamese enterprise that promotes traditional handicrafts and offers work-from-home income for young mothers.
