A thatched wooden stable with warm golden light glowing inside, Mary and Joseph on either side, and the baby in the manger between them. It is shallow from front to back because it is scenery, made to stand on a shelf or a table at the heart of December.

Age Recommendations

3456

From age three and up, through the Pre-K and early-primary years. Scenery made to come back out every December.

Why it lasts.

Solid linden with non-toxic paints, cut by machine and then sanded and painted by hand in a small family workshop. The figures are simple, rounded shapes without painted faces, which leaves a child room to tell the story in their own words.

Who it's for

For the parent
It suits a family that wants a nativity a child is allowed to handle, so the story is played with rather than only looked at.
For the educator
It supports a December storytelling shelf where children retell the nativity by placing and moving the figures themselves.
For the gift-giver
It makes a meaningful Christmas gift that comes back out every year, and the desert night background can be added later.

Ways to play.

Children set the figures out themselves, bring Mary and Joseph to the stable, and lay the baby in the manger on Christmas Eve. Add the desert night background behind it, or gather the farm animals you already have at the door.

Materials & construction

Cut, sanded, and painted by hand in a small family workshop in Serbia, so the grain and color vary a little from piece to piece. Color is worked into the wood, so the grain still shows through.

The wood is solid linden: light for small hands and close-grained enough to hold a carved edge.

Care & storage

Wipe clean with a dry cloth, or one that is barely damp. Never soak or submerge it in water, and do not leave it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat. Store it indoors somewhere dry, and stand the taller pieces upright rather than resting them on a painted edge. Small parts. Not for children under 3 years, and young children should be supervised during play.
