The towers go up first, because they are the tallest and a child wants height. Then the gates, the walls with their keyhole doors, the two staircases that let a figure climb to the top. Sixteen pieces of oiled alder, each heavy enough to stand on its own, and every arrangement makes a different castle.

Small gems set into the towers catch the window light, so the castle glows a little in the afternoon. By the end of the week it has been a fortress, a royal palace, a home for felt gnomes, and a market town with a gate that only opens for a password.

From age three through the early school years. Younger children build and knock down; older children design whole kingdoms and tell the stories that go with them.

Why it lasts.

Most castles arrive finished. This one arrives as sixteen pieces and a question: what kind of castle is it today?

Solid alder

Thick, oiled alder with the grain left visible. The pieces have real weight, so a tower stands without wobbling and a wall holds its line.

Gems in the wood

Acrylic gems are set into the towers and gates. Near a window or on a light table, the castle sparkles without a single battery.

Never the same twice

Towers, gates, arched walls and stairs combine into countless layouts, and the set joins the Small Fairytale Castle for a whole kingdom.

Who it's for

For the parent
You want a castle your child builds instead of one that comes finished, in solid wood that will still look good on the shelf years from now.
For the educator
A block-corner castle for storytelling and early engineering, with gems that make it a natural fit for the light table.
For the gift-giver
A showpiece gift that looks beautiful on Christmas morning and keeps getting played with long after.

Ways to play.

  • Build a fortress, a palace, or a walled town, then rebuild it a new way
  • Set it by a window or on a light table and watch the gems glow
  • Add felt or wooden figures for stories of knights, royals and gnomes
  • Combine with the Small Fairytale Castle for a larger kingdom
  • Use the stairs and gates for counting, sorting and pattern play

Bauspiel Bauspiel is Uwe Deckelmann and his daughter Hanna. 'Bauspiel' means 'building game' in German, and the line grows out of Friedrich Fröbel's kindergarten tradition of simple forms that ask nothing and allow everything. The wood is native European lime, alder and beech, with maple and cherry from sustainable cultivation, colored and oiled so the grain stays visible and the soul of the wood remains perceptible. The acrylic and gems come from Taiwan or China. Everything is quality-checked and shipped from Augsburg, Germany.
